Our partner Tamkeen for Legal Aid and Human Rights won the Stop Slavery Impact Award 2020. Since 2015, the award has been bestowed on companies that are key agents in the global fight against modern slavery. In 2020, new categories were added to the award in order to recognize the work done by NGOs, grass roots organizations, the public sector and journalists. Tamkeen received the award in the category of NGOs for its efforts to achieve policy and legislation change that “resulted in positive impact in the fight to eradicate slavery”.

The Executive Director of Tamkeen, Linda Al Kalash, received the award during a ceremony that was held in London on 20 February 2020. In her statement, she stressed that the crime of human trafficking is extremely complex, which makes it more difficult to identify compared to other crimes. Moreover, Kalash pointed out that human trafficking could potentially affect everyone regardless of their origin and background, yet the most vulnerable to this crime are refugees and migrant workers, especially women among them. With regard to Tamkeen’s work in Jordan, Kalash stressed on the importance of organizations that provide protection and prevention services. She added that it is of utmost importance to define and advocate for an improved legal protection mechanism for labor migrants and persons who became victims to forced labor and human trafficking.
