“Crisis of the Ocean - Threats to our Marine Ecosystems and Ways to Protect the Ocean”

19th -20th of October 2017 in Aqaba, Jordan

The Heinrich Böll Foundation (hbs) welcomes young professionals from Palestine & Jordan to apply for participating in the workshop “Crisis of the Ocean - Threats to our Marine Ecosystems and Ways to Protect the Ocean” that will take place from October 19th to 20th 2017 in Aqaba, Jordan.

While threats to seas and oceans are increasing and Earth’s marine ecosystems are approaching crisis, there is little awareness of issues such as pollution , the exploitation of the marine ecosystems and the fundamental role of the oceans for our ecosystem.

Marine conservation is one of the least supported fields of environmental protection. In order to raise awareness of the pressing issues, hbs recently published the ocean atlas - a collection of articles, data and graphics on the threats to our marine ecosystems.

Based on the Ocean Atlas, the workshop will focus on the current risks facing the seas and oceans, and possible solutions. Four main topics will be addressed:

1) Sustainable Development in Coastal Area

2) Ocean Governance

3) Pollution of the Sea and

4) The role of the oceans in slowing down climate change

The workshop will include lectures, group work, discussions, as well as a field visit.

Participants:

This workshop inter alia targets junior professionals, graduates in fields relevant to environmental conservation, biologists, activists, and researchers working at government institutions, NGOs, civil society organizations, think tanks or other institutions from Palestine and Jordan. The age range is between 23 and 40 years.

Application Process:

To be considered for the workshop, please attach Curriculum Vitae and fill out the application form  as well as a short paper (600 words maximum).
