The Importance of Civil Societies

To stand up for civil societies worldwide our Berlin headquarters are launching the Global Perspective Conference on “The Future of Civil Spaces” with over 160 international participants. In coordination with the conference the Heinrich Böll Foundation also launched the Civic Charter which is the global framework for people’s participation and aims to protect civil societies. The charter calls on governments to guarantee and protect civil societies.

LIVE STREAM FROM BERLIN - Squeezed: Space for civil society

A strong, vibrant, and diverse civil society is part of a functioning democracy – it is the air that a democracy needs to breathe.

On the evening of 27 October 2016, we would like to analyze the political situation with international guests from civil society. We want to know the specifics of how the work of civil society organizations is restricted, and the impact this has on their work. Furthermore, we would like to focus on counter strategies and get into a political dialogue about how politics can react to the repressive measures affecting civil society all over the world.

What we do

During the last years citizens in the Middle East have increasingly been demanding active participation in decision making with regards to their political and social future. Nevertheless, the outcome of revolutions, movements, and transformations are yet unknown. Many fear instability and new authoritarianism, but the crucial role of civil societies in the region in this process is clear. This applies to Palestine and Jordan as well.
In cooperation with local Partners in the West Bank, Gaza, and Jordan, hbs supports projects which aim to encourage political democratic reform actors and media producers, in order to increase opportunities for social and political participation, and reforms. In all its activities, the hbs emphasises the special importance of gender democracy.
